About the title:
Subsequence is an experimental media project that discovers and disseminates topics related to craft and culture from around the world, working under the tagline, “Arts & Crafts for the Age of Eclectic.” Human culture is able to propagate beyond borders and time. What is born in one place can be transmitted to faraway lands, across seas, and through time. In that process it is not uncommon for local culture to evolve through influence, creating altogether new meaning. The magazine views such exchange in the age of instant technology as positive, looking upon it with great interest. By conveying the history and culture of people from various areas alongside their values and crafts, they hope to create dialogue.
The first issue of the large format magazine launched in 2019 by a team based in Tokyo, consisting of domestic and international staff with diverse backgrounds, with the mission of bringing fresh, unknown material with original angles to readers. Their priority was to create something like a craftsperson who loves their work would make.
