This is the first volume of the art journal Works on Paper, which is published once a year by Permanent Collection. Works on Paper provides a format for the co-founders of Permanent Collection, Mariah and Fanny, to commission original research, creative writing and criticism relating to art and design. Each volume, designed by award-winning London-based design studio, A Practice for Everyday Life, is printed in small runs in London and intended to be collectable. While the elegant blind-debossed cover design will remain, its color will change with each volume.

For Volume One, Mariah and Fanny asked contributors to consider ideas around ‘collecting and collections’. Contributors include the following roster of acclaimed writers, artists, curators and critics: Hilton Als, Negar Azimi, Joseph Becker, Bruno Blunk, Jeremy Deller, Mark Dion, Jason Farago, Fritz Haeg, Dakin Hart, Gemma Holt, Thessaly La Force, Lucy Kumara Moore and Filipa Ramos.

About the Brand

Launched in 2016, Permanent Collection is a line of clothing, accessories and objects based on historical and contemporary originals. Permanent Collection collaborates with craftspeople in the United States, Europe and Japan to produce small runs of new products using high quality materials and unique processes: timeless objects and garments for a modern lifestyle.

Daughters of legendary Northern Californian artist JB Blunk and world-renowned chef Alice Waters, respectively, co-founders Mariah Nielson and Fanny Singer met in London while studying design and art history. They recognized in each other a shared set of values, in relation to fashion and personal style, but also to how they approached design and art. They began Permanent Collection by selecting a group of historical designs they felt were elegant, minimal and versatile: the types of pieces they believed could become the staples of anyone's personal “permanent collection.”

Permanent Collection offers instant heirlooms: understated yet indispensable pieces that will never go out of style.
